Es klingt wie ein rauschendes Geständnis. Elliott Smith spricht in seinen Liedern aus der Seele und kümmert sich eigentlich nicht darum, ob es zu persönlich ist. Gerade deswegen erreichen seine Lieder einen Tiefgang, der bei anderen Musikerkollegen immer wieder misslingt.

Der kontroverse Indie-Rocker Elliott Smith wurde 2003 in der Wohnung seiner Geliebten tot aufgefunden. Todesursache: Ein tödlicher Messerstich in der Brust. Angeblich Selbstmord, aber bis heute nicht ganz und gar geklärt.

Denn beide Alben sind in einer scheinbaren Isolation im hauseigenen Keller entstanden.
Musik als Therapie. Was allerdings Mark Oliver Everett - besser bekannt als „E“ -  gut getan hat, schien bei Elliott Smith nur die Sache zu verschlimmern.
Denn bei Zeilen wie:

Isolation pulled you past a tunnel

Stellt man unfreiwillig Schlüsse über den Geisteszustand des Sängers.

Dabei lief es für Elliott Smith recht gut. 1997 machte er mit dem Album „Either/Or“ auf sich aufmerksam und lieferte für den Film „Good Will Hunting“ ein paar Songs. „Miss Misery“ brachte ihm sogar eine Oscarnominierung und einen Vertrag mit Dreamworks Records.

Die Arbeit an „From A Basement On The Hill“ verlief allerdings schleppend. Er hatte ständig mit Alkoholsucht, Depressionen und Drogen zu kämpfen. Die Probleme wurden ständig von ihm thematisiert.
Mit Elliott Smiths Tod ist ein Sänger von uns gegangen, welcher noch viel Raum zur Entfaltung hatte. Wie groß er hätte werden können, kann man nur erahnen, sein Potential war allerdings riesig.
